A Fresh Take on Gelato: Tofu G’s Unique Offering

Tofu G Gelato brings a refreshing twist to the dessert world by crafting premium gelato using tofu as its base, inspired by the traditional Korean method of grinding soybeans with a millstone. This innovative approach results in a silky, creamy texture with a subtle, nutty soybean flavour that sets it apart from traditional ice cream. While not dairy-free, Tofu G’s gelato is lighter and lower in fat, making it a fantastic option for those looking to indulge without the heaviness of regular ice cream.

The pop-up offers six unique flavours, each handcrafted with high-quality, natural ingredients like non-GMO soybeans, roasted sesame, and sweet potato. Priced at SGD $8 per scoop (or $9 with a cone), the flavours include:

- Original Tofu: A creamy, earthy classic that highlights the delicate soybean taste.

- Black Sesame: Fragrant and bold, a favourite for its rich, nutty profile.

- Korean Sweet Potato: A sweet, earthly and smooth blend with a comforting flavour.

- Chodang Sweet Corn: Reminiscent of nostalgic potong ice cream, with sweet corn bits.

- Pistachio: Nutty with real pistachio bits, though less intense than traditional pistachio gelato.

- High Protein Tofu: A health-conscious choice for those seeking an extra protein boost.

For those who prefer a lighter treat, Tofu G also serves a Soft Tofu Soft Serve ($7, or $8 with a cone), offering the same creamy soybean goodness in a fluffier form.

A Korean-Inspired Aesthetic

Located at 333A Orchard Road, #02-21, Mandarin Gallery, Tofu G’s pop-up is designed to transport you to a modern Korean hanok. The space features rustic wooden decor, warm lighting, and Korean-inspired furnishings, creating a cozy yet chic atmosphere perfect for Instagram snaps. However, seating is limited, with only a communal table for about 10 people and a couple of benches, making it more of a grab-and-go dessert spot.

The pop-up is open daily from 11 AM to 10 PM, but it gets crowded after lunch and dinner, so plan your visit accordingly. Since it’s a temporary setup, there’s no confirmed end date, so don’t wait too long to check it out!

Why Tofu G Gelato is Worth a Visit

Tofu G is more than just a dessert shop. It’s an experience. Here’s why you should swing by:

1. Innovative Flavours: The tofu-based gelato offers a unique taste that blends tradition with modernity. The Black Sesame and Original Tofu flavors are crowd favourites, while the Chodang Sweet Corn evokes nostalgic vibes.

2. Health-Conscious Indulgence: With its high-protein, low-fat profile, Tofu G’s gelato is perfect for those who want a treat that aligns with a balanced lifestyle.

3. Korean Flair: The pop-up’s aesthetic and inspiration draw from Gangneung, Korea, a city famous for its tofu products, adding an authentic cultural touch to your dessert adventure.

4. Limited-Time Pop-Up: This is a temporary setup, but Tofu G has teased a permanent flagship store coming soon to Telok Ayer, so catch it at Mandarin Gallery while it lasts!

Tips for Your Visit

- Try Before You Buy: Tofu G allows you to sample all six flavors before deciding, so take your time to find your favorite.

- Best Picks: Reviewers rave about the Black Sesame for its fragrant creaminess and the Original Tofu for its authentic soybean taste. If you’re feeling adventurous, the Chodang Sweet Corn is a fun, nostalgic choice.

- Price Consideration: At $8 per scoop, Tofu G is on the pricier side compared to local desserts, but the artisanal quality and unique concept justify the cost for a one-of-a-kind experience.

*Note that Tofu G is not halal-certified.
