On a leisurely afternoon in Yishun, we found ourselves drawn to The Hainan Story Coffee House at Northpoint City’s North Wing basement. A charming outpost promising the soul-warming flavours of traditional Hainanese cuisine, reimagined with a contemporary flourish. We simply couldn’t resist the allure of nostalgia wrapped in modern comfort, and we’re rather glad we succumbed.
Stepping inside feels like wandering into a stylishly restored 1980s kopitiam that has been given a discerning makeover. Warm timber tones, exposed brickwork, and intricate mosaic flooring create an atmosphere that is both evocatively retro and effortlessly chic. The space hums with the gentle bustle of families and friends, yet retains an inviting cosiness. The sort of place where one could linger over a second cup of yuan yang without a hint of hurry.
The Menu: Tradition Meets Quiet Innovation
The offerings strike a delightful balance between heartfelt classics and clever reinterpretations, all executed with evident care. Prices quoted below are the full menu rates (in SGD) before any membership discounts.

Our standout dish was the 1980s Hainanese English Crispy Pork Cutlet (SGD 12.80). A triumphant nod to the Hainanese-Western fare of yesteryear. The cutlet emerged gloriously crisp yet remarkably light, free from any greasiness, and was beautifully complemented by buttery mashed potato, golden fries, and a bright, crunchy coleslaw. It’s the kind of plate that evokes childhood memories while satisfying thoroughly grown-up palates.

Equally intriguing was the Baked Hainanese Rice Cake Lasagna (SGD 9.80), an inventive layering of soft, steamed rice cakes in place of pasta, baked with a rich, savoury sauce and a subtle cheese crown. The result is comforting yet surprisingly refined. A dish that whispers of home while flirting with fusion.

The Signature Laksa with Hainanese Steamed Chicken (SGD 10.80) proved an inspired pairing: velvety steamed chicken atop a fragrant, coconut-laced laksa broth that carried just the right spike of spice. Tender, aromatic, and deeply satisfying.
We also savoured the Sesame Oil Chicken with Ginger & Spring Onion + Rice (SGD 11.80). Fragrant, soothing, and impeccably balanced, with the sesame oil and ginger singing in gentle harmony. A timeless remedy on a plate.
For a lighter bite, Ah Mai’s Housemade Chili Chye Poh Chwee Kueh (SGD 6.30) delivered silky steamed rice cakes crowned with punchy preserved radish and a spirited house-made chilli. Addictive in the most elegant way.

To accompany it all, a steaming Yuan Yang, Hot, Small (SGD 2.60). That classic marriage of robust coffee and tea, brewed with the precision one expects from a proper kopitiam.
